A Few Tips for Becoming a Confident Rider

One of the main things that you need for becoming a more confident rider is practice, but there are also a few other things that you can try that will help you to refine your riding technique.

The right clothes

The correct motorcycle gear is essential. Riding is hazardous and protecting yourself is a must. Make sure you choose a helmet that has been safety checked and approved. Do not compromise on the quality simply to save a bit of money.

Make sure the clothes you get can cope with the weather and offer some kind of visibility – such as hi-vis stripes – particularly if you are riding a black motorcycle. Make sure that your gloves offer protection for the wrists, and your shoes or boots are protective for the ankles.

Checking the bike

Get into the habit of inspecting the bike before you set out on a ride alone or with a motorcycling club. Make sure the tyre pressures are okay, and that the oil and fuel levels are sufficient. Become familiar with how the bike looks, and you’ll be able to see straight away if anything is wrong. These checks are particularly important if you are setting off on a long ride.

Develop defensive habits

There are a few things that riders need to do to make sure that they are safe when they are out. A good example is regular shoulder checks when stopping the bike and when starting off again. Being aware of blind spots is essential to make sure that you are always visible to drivers.

Familiarity with the weather

It is really important to be familiar with the weather forecast. The weather affects the surface conditions, and there are a few things to be aware of. For example, in the rain, the painted road markings can be slippery.

In extremely hot weather, the road surface can soften and make it dangerous too. However, this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t drive in these conditions. If you have practised in different environments, your skills will be solid enough to make you confident in most weather conditions.
